Breaking Silence: Passing the Mic to Our Daughters Project (BSPMD) is a filmed based project, offering a platform for young women in hip-hop to openly discuss and analyze the messages they’re receiving within the culture.
BSPMD uses hip-hop as a vehicle of self-empowerment and as a research and educational tool for tackling gender relation issues in the culture. The project sets out to challenge the young women participants to analyze the way they are interpreting messages within mainstream Hip-Hop and through dialogue with each other, encourage them to confront and analyze their own and each other’s views. The discussion offers these girls and their peers a platform to address where they currently stand, and project their vision of where they would like the culture to be in the future, while offering community support for young women and their voices.
BSPMD was developed in 2012 in effort to fill the missing void of young women’s voices in discussions surrounding hip-hop culture. The documentary poses question on how young women are interpreting messages within mainstream Hip-Hop. Through peer dialogue, these young women openly confront and analyze their own and each other’s views, touching …on misogyny, body image, creativity, sexism and their overall love for the culture.
